Guildford, Woking & District Tuesday Triples League 2017

The Guildford, Woking & District Tuesday Triples league is for men aged 55 and upwards. There are two leagues; Guildford, in which Burpham plays, and Woking. Two triples play each week and we played 18 games in total in 2017. Out of these we won 14 and lost only 4, but even this was not good enough for us to win our league. That honour went to Woodbridge Hill who suffered only one loss all season with an almost unbelievable shot difference of +352, which compares to our more meagre +99. What was pleasing was that we only conceded 7 shots in our first game and 15 in the second, away, against the league winners.

Any club member meeting the two criteria of being male and over 55 can put their name down for selection each week. During the season 15 names were on the selection list two or more times and every one of those got to play. I was able to select good combinations of players while satisfying the desires of those wanting to play. The good thing about this league is the camaraderie with the other clubs and all the games have been fun regardless of the result.

The highlight was our penultimate game at home to Godalming. Both teams began the match on equal points so it was a crucial match for both to win. In this league it is only the best aggregate score to win two points. For one triple we fielded Derek Keen, Rod Spencer and Bert Forrest as skip, a combined age of over 250 years, and were not disappointed as they achieved a 20 shot to 11 victory and easily outweighed the loss in our other triple.

Our final game was away to Merrow and if we lost and Godalming won their final game we would have been third due to Godalming's superior shot difference. In a close match we beat Merrow by ONE shot so the fact that Godalming lost to Woodbridge Hill was immaterial.

Thank you to all those that played as you all contributed to the excellent result and the pleasure of playing.
