Club comps 2024

Updated: Nov 13

The first club competition of 2024 was the revamped Miller Triples competition on 17 Aug. As last year it was played as a one-day competition in warm sunshine. Winners were Catherine Hughes, Mike King and Geoff Sheldon.

The main finals were played over the weekend 31 Aug and 1 Sept.

The finals proper took place over the weekend of Saturday 31 Aug and Sunday 1 Sept. On a cold overcast Saturday the Ladies Singles, the Two Wood singles, and the Mens Pairs were held. In the 2 wood Simon Fillary came out the winner against Linda Macbeth. Current Ladies Champion Glenda Mogg successfully defended her title against first time finalist (but surely not the last) Karen King. In the Men's Pairs Mick Pearce and Mike King got the better of Bob Hughes and Dave Osborne. Trophies were presented by President Colin Colbrook.

Sunday morning saw the Ladies Pairs final between Glenda Mogg & Liz Hyland and Ade Hughes & Margaret Liley. Ade and Margaret came out winners. Ade's third year in a row!

In the very warm afternoon Mike King achieved a family double by getting past newcomer Peter Lloyd to win the Novice Singles title. In the Handicap Singles final Simon Fillary overcame Rex Thorpe leading almost from the off. In the Crossman Plate final Geoff Sheldon dragged himself back from an early deficit to record a win in the face of a strong showing by Tom Tung. Another future champion to be sure! After allowing her a breather from her morning exertions Ade Hughes did the double in the afternoon when she and David Osborne beat Dave Cheesman and Karen King in the Mixed Pairs.

Monday saw the Men's Singles final between Barry Macbeth and Peter Challens, postponed from Saturday because of illness. Peter came out the eventual winner by 21-15 so bringing Simon Fillary's 3 year reign to an end. Monday also saw the new format final of the Whicher Cup between Keith Sutton, Tom Tung and Derek Elliott on one side and John Kershaw, Vernon Bailey and Barbara Hopkinson on the other. Keith and crew came out the eventual winners.
