SQUIBB SALVER 18 August
Twenty eight members assembled at the club on Saturday 18 August to take part in this annual two-wood singles competition. Organised by President and Competitions Secretary Barry Macbeth four groups of 7 played a round-robin competition throughout the morning in near perfect conditions and on a green playing the best it has all season. With all the round robin matches completed four group winners emerged. These four then played two semi-finals; Simon Fillary v David Newton, and yours truly taking on Keith Sutton - a double winner of this event. The final was eventually played between defending champion Simon and me. Surprised to find myself in this position I then amazed myself, and the assembled throng, by winning the whole shebang!
CHIPCHASE CUP 3 June
48 club members enjoyed a day in the sun on Saturday 3 June contesting the Chipchase Cup. This 3 wood limited ends competition kicked off at 10am and the finalists took to the green just after 6pm.
The highest scorers from each of four groups went forward to the semi finals. The semi finalists were
Dougie Stewart & Janet Rochester v Rod Spence & Cheryl Messenger
and
Peter Challens & Val Wells v Barbara Sutton and Brian Conway
Peter Challens was a last minute stand-in for 2017 winner Graham Liley who had to withdraw through injury. The many spectators enjoyed some fine bowling in the sunshine. Both the semis and the finals displayed high quality bowling. Peter and Val emerged worthy winners.
Afterwards we enjoyed our platters alfresco while the pied wagtails rushed around the green dining out on the bugs and crumbs.
