VE DAY 75 ANNIVERSARY AND MEMORIES
Updated: May 20, 2020
Angela and Graham Potter
On VE Day 1945, we were both still evacuated to the country - Graham was in Cambridge living with a schoolteacher friend of his Mother's and was going to school aged 6. Considering that the American airfields were all in East Anglia, I now wonder how safe we were from bombing but I think we had control of the air by the time the USA joined in. He definitely remembers a street party as you see in all the film clips. It must have been in the street by the school and somehow people must have done some quick shopping and used up a lot of ration coupons to lay on something a bit more tasty .
Angela and her Mother were in Tring for a lot of the War. They had relations who owned a lot of the farmland round there. Angela was 9 in 1945 and remembers marching down Tring High Street with her school singing "Onward Christian Soldiers" and finishing with tea on the green by the Church.

Well VE Day celebration weekend is now over. The weather was glorious, at least Friday & Saturday were. We had afternoon tea on our balcony with a glass of bubbly. We also managed to wave to Dave & Jan Cory who were leaning out of an upstairs window.

From Rob Long
The recipes shown on your text took me back to my days in Colwyn Bay North Wales. My father, a civil servant worked in the Colwyn Bay Hotel which was Lord Wooltons headquarters of the Ministry of food during the war. He came home one day with some recipes for my mother to try out. Some were very unsuccessful but the Woolton pie mentioned and the 'bully beef special' went down well. We were then quite unaware of the terrible losses of merchant sailors who died bringing supplies of food and materials to this country. They should be well remembered this Friday.

We'll meet again Don't know where Don't know when But I know we'll meet again Some sunny day Keep smiling through Just like you always do 'Till the blue skies chase Those dark clouds far away And I will just say hello To the folks that you know Tell them you won't be long They'll be happy to know That, as I saw you go You were singing this song We'll meet again Don't know where Don't know when But I know we'll meet again Some sunny day
